Wine Ratings
Explained

Canada - Ontario - Kew Vineyards
Pinot Noir 2013
Rating 90.00 / Niagara
Ontario $23.95
Light-medium-bodied, this well-made pinot comes across with jammy, berry-plum fruit yet stays admirably dry, with pleasantly and gently dusty tannins. And it reveals an earthy-underbrush side, slightly amplified, it would seem, by four good years of maturation. Excellent, flavourful varietal character. Available in Ontario.

France - Bordeaux - Margaux
Ségla 2010
Rating 93.00 / Bordeaux - Margaux
Ontario $69.95
Pricy, to be sure. But this is the baby brother (or sister) to the much more expensive flagship wine of Château Rauzan-Ségla, the famed second-growth Bordeaux property in Margaux that's owned by the luxury-goods house Chanel. And take note of the vintage: It's from 2010, a banner year for the region. Medium-full, the wine is gently dusty and optimally ripe, showing great fruit purity and notes of mint and pencil shavings (call it minerality if you prefer). A red with finesse and energy. If you're the type to occasionally splurge to this degree on a fine, cellar-worthy wine, take this one very seriously. Available in Ontario.

New Zealand - Marlborough
Whitehaven
Sauvignon blanc 2017
Rating 90.00 /
Ontario $19.25 / New Brunswick $21.29
Brand-new vintage of a widely distributed and well-made white. Classic Marlborough sauvignon profile delivered with good balance. Round and silky, with a gently sweet core and notes of grapefruit, lemon grass and smoky flint, underscored by zesty acidity.

Canada - British Columbia
Mission Hill Five Vineyards
Chardonnay 2015
Rating: 87.00
Region: Okanagan Valley
Varietal: Chardonnay
This crowd-pleaser has the angles covered. Medium-full, round and fleshy, it delivers ripe, almost syrupy-sweet, Tropicana Orange and peach-like fruit along with a generous helping of vanilla. Smartly made, it beats most California chardonnays at its price range. Available at the above price in British Columbia, various price in Alberta, $15.64 in Saskatchewan, $15.99 in Manitoba, $16.45 in Ontario, $18.99 in New Brunswick (on sale for $17.50).

Canada - British Columbia
Painted Rock Estate Winery Ltd.
Red Icon 2015
Rating: 94.00
Region: Okanagan Valley
Varietal: Red blend
Food Pairing: Steak
Price: $47.79 CD, in B.C.
A commanding, richly confident and expertly sculpted red blend. It's not cheap, but put "Napa" on the label and there's no telling how much higher a price this would fetch. A merlot-led Bordeaux-style blend, it's smooth and ripe, with succulent cassis leading the fruit parade. Then savoury notes of tobacco and cedar chime in along with dark chocolate, smoke and spice. Approachable now, it should evolve gracefully for at least a dozen years.  http://www.paintedrock.ca
