Augustus Osborne Lamplough (1877 — 1930)
Born in Manchester, Augustus Lamplough studied at the Chester School of Art before he set out to the Middle East and North Africa to paint. During the nineteenth century, increasing numbers of young artists visited the Levant and many found enough inspiration to continue painting Oriental scenes for their entire lives. Lamplough returned to lecture at Leeds School of Art, exhibiting regularly in London at the Fine Art Society and the Royal Academy. He also exhibited frequently in the North of England at the Royal Cumbrian Academy and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
He was a prominent landscape and architectural painter. He also became teacher at Leeds School of Art. Lamplough traveled in Europe, Egypt, the Middle East & North Africa. He is perhaps best known for his desert scenes and views of Arab towns and cities. Very prolific and painted mainly in watercolours to a very high standard.
